A radical Kol Nidre

Tonight at Kol Nidre services, the women of Kol Ami and their guests and friends are invited to create a tikkun… a rectification of the universe.

Following services we will invite any woman to hold the Torah and take a photograph with it.  These will be sent to support Anat Hoffman, director of the Israel Religious Action Center and leader of Women of the Wall. As I wrote about here this summer and in my Rosh Hashanah morning sermon, Anat was arrested this summer for carrying a Torah away from the Kotel to the spot it was to be read.  The Supreme Court of Israel ruled that while they couldn’t read the torah there, nothing was said about carrying the Torah AWAY from the wall.  And yet the Ministry of Justice in Israel is reccomending charging Anat with a felony.

They need to see women carrying Torah scrolls and that is what we will do. T

All of the photos will be sent to Women of the Wall for their use and support! And they will be sent to the Prime Minister of Israel.

Read here Anat’s op-ed that appeared in the NY Daily News before Rosh Hashanah.

The Kotel belongs to all Jews. Not just to Orthodox Jews.  This is an opportunity to bring a healing to the universe.  And a healing on the holiest night of the year.  Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur are exactly about making the world whole again and healing the hurts and wounds caused by our errors and transgressions.  It is about healing relationships with God and our fellow human beings.   Here is a chance to help bring about a healing in the universe.
