Summer is here!

Summer is now officially here.  Today is the longest day of the year. I love the light and I love being outdoors late into the day. I think for many of us urban dwellers unless someone tells us on the radio, television, twitter feed or Facebook post that the seasons have officially changed we might never notice.  Trapped in our cars or office or houses we don’t have enough connection with the changing seasons.  And then when you live in Los Angeles you have to pay attention to the subtleties of the changes.

With weather patterns changing so dramatically and with increasing climate change due to global warming sometimes we are fooled.  June in Los Angeles isn’t very warm.  It is gloomy and cloudy and often cold. Back east the rainy seasons of spring have not only intensified but in many places they experience nothing less than monsoons now. Not to mention those killer tornadoes.  While other areas are drought stricken. The state of Texas is almost 80 percent drought lands.

So while the media frenzy over Rep. Weiner’s resignation swirls and the cable networks focus on sensational trials, take a moment out to appreciate the long summer days and nights. Make the most of it. Take an evening walk and change the pace of your routine.  Get outside and enjoy this longest day of the year.

It might not be the same as a summer vacation-but it can be a respite from the frenzy.
