After the Holy Days

It has been a long Jewish month.  The Jewish holy days of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shimini-Azeret, Simchat Torah and Hoshanah Rabbah are now behind us for 5779.  The intensity of the Jewish Holy Day Season is a marathon of the soul and sometimes the body too.  For those of us who are clergy, rabbis and cantors and those of us who work in synagogues from the janitors, to administrative staff, bookkeepers, youth professionals and teachers the holy days are challenging.  We want to ensure the proper respect for the season, lifting up the souls and spirit of the communities we serve. We want “our people” to have a positive, welcoming experience, even as we atone for our sins, errors and transgressions.  We want the holy day season to be a time when our members and supporters might connect more deeply with God, the Jewish community, Israel, and their family and friends.

A lot rides on these days. There are so many expectations.

I only pray that you felt renewed and refreshed by the music, the prayers, and the sense of belonging that we all tried to create.  I know I am ready for some rest. Which is one way I know that I gave my all during these holy days.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.  Thank you for the opportunity to pray with you, sing with you and connect with you.
