Does God live on the Planet Mercury?

The heavens got a little closer this week.  NASA spacecraft Messenger took more than 300 photographs of the planet Mercury.  Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun.  Never before have we seen such pictures of the first planet in our solar system.  Messenger was launched in 2004! It has just arrived in Mercury orbit in March 2011! Now that is some journey.

It is amazing.  First that we are seeing something so close up that we have never seen before.  Secondly it is amazing that we have the technology and know-how to send a camera that far into our solar system and so close to our Sun. The human spirit that hungers for more knowledge and hungers to explore is evident in the exploration of space.

For me this is a spiritual endeavor.  Exploring the heavens and our universe is a quest to continue to make sense of our world.  The ancients tried to do this and we continue this at an entirely different level.  Our thirst for scientific knowledge is also seeking answers to age-old questions of how our universe came to be.  These are the questions the Bible asks too!

We are all seeking God in our own ways-rabbis and scientists too.

  1. After many years of spiritual exploration, this scientist is finally starting to understand the nexus of science and spirituality. Thanks for being my “docent” in my journey.
